In conjunction with the exhibition Monuments & Myths: The America of Sculptors Augustus Saint- Gaudens and Daniel Chester French, this illustrated online presentation will focus on the historical artistic communities of Cornish, NH, and Stockbridge, MA, as well as New Hope, PA.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Daniel Chester French, and William Langson Lathrop were at the centers of thriving artist colonies that attracted creatives from a variety of disciplines. This talk will explore the similarities between these influential colonies as well as what made them unique, highlight thesculptors, painters, and others who gravitated to Cornish, Stockbridge, and New Hope, and provide a backdrop for the works on view in the special exhibition and on permanent display at the Michener Art Museum.
