Counselors in Training
Volunteering at the Michener is an excellent way for middle and high school students to volunteer in a meaningful way, helping artists of all ages achieve their dreams. Teen volunteers also learn about art, art education, and museum life, while adding valuable community service experience to National Junior Honor Society, National Honor Society, National Art Honors Society, Key Club, and college applications.
CIT Information
Applicants must be at least entering grade 9 in the fall. Students graduating from high school in June may apply.
Camps run from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. CITs may volunteer for full or half-day programs. CITs must arrive early and stay 10-15 minutes late.
Counselors-in-Training assist with the lively summer art camps at the Michener Art Museum throughout the summer. Teens must apply and will be notified of their schedule once accepted. Teacher Recommendations are also required.

2026 Counselor-in-Training Application
2026 CIT Teacher Recommendation
The CIT program is made possible through the support of thINK Communication Group.
Important Info to read before applying:
-
- Only completed applications received on or before April 30th will be given full consideration. Late applications will be reviewed only after on-time applications are considered, and only if there are needs remaining in the schedule.
-
- Students who were CITs in previous years need to complete a new application every year.
-
- Priority will be given to students entering grade 9 through completing grade 12 (entering college or the workplace in the fall) who can volunteer for at least two camp sessions. Applications do not guarantee placement.
-
- All applicants will be contacted in early May about the status of their application.
-
- There will be a mandatory CIT orientation program prior to the start of camp. Two dates will be announced closer to the start of camp.
-
- Students aware of conflicts, including sports, marching band, and summer jobs should NOT indicate they are available if they will have to arrive late or leave early. End of day clean-up is an important responsibility and part of volunteering through the program. CITs are expected to stay about 10-15 minutes after the camp day to prepare for the following day, and maybe later (30 mins) on Fridays.
-
- If changes are made to students’ summer availability, they should contact the Michener as soon as possible.
-
- A CIT ice-cream social will be held at the end of the summer to celebrate the hard work of our volunteers. Date will be provided once accepted to the program.
